Are Pouches Really Better than Cans?

When looking into food storage the aspect of packaging can be a big deciding factor, if you understand the differences and how they affect the shelf life, quality, and taste. It’s not just about the food inside, it’s also about how the food is sealed that determines how well it will sustain high quality. So, what is the deal with pouches versus cans?
Cans have been around almost as long as food storage itself, and although it is certainly an acceptable way of storing freeze dried food, it is also not the most efficient. The commonly used #10 can has been a staple for long term food, but it is not foolproof. These cans, for example, contain 25+ servings of one meal in each container. This means, unless you have a very large family, some of your food will go to waste. You are left eating one meal for days on end, rushing to finish the contents of the can before the food goes bad. With pouches, on the other hand, you get only 4 or fewer servings per bag of each meal, this way you get to eat what you want, when you want, without any food going to waste. Also, you don’t need to worry about the chemicals and BPAs that often come with cans.

Some might question the integrity of a simple Mylar pouch. Being so light weight and thin can look like a pro or a con. The small and light-weight pouches are easy to store and transport, but might appear weak. Mylar, however, is a very tough material, and sealed inside durable buckets like ours, they are safe to outlast their 25 year shelf life. The buckets actually make the food supply easier to store and transport. No need to buy expensive shelving for cans, the buckets store securely with a lock-in stacking capability. You don’t want to be evacuating in an emergency and scrambling for cans, which can be difficult to transport in a hurry. Buckets filled with pouches are light weight and easy to grab on the go.

For all these reasons and more, we chose pouches over cans for our food storage. To read more about thinking outside-the-can and how we stand out from our competitors, click Here.
